Name Badges and Event ID Cards from a Guest List

A name badge generator is one template and one JSON object per attendee. jsontoimg fills the name, company, and role, adds a check-in code from a Code layer, and returns a PDF for print or a PNG for a digital badge. It suits conferences, workshops, and member events with a registration list.

Layers that change per badge

  • name: large text, with auto-fit on for long names
  • company and role: smaller text lines
  • photo: an optional image layer taking a public https file ending .png, .jpg, .jpeg, or .webp
  • code: a Code layer with format qrcode or code128, carrying the attendee id

Fixed items stay in the design: event name, dates, sponsor strip, and the colour band for each ticket tier.

Render a badge

{
  "template": "<design-id>",
  "format": "pdf",
  "layers": {
    "name": { "text": "Grace Hopper" },
    "company": { "text": "Navy Research" },
    "role": { "text": "Speaker" },
    "code": { "text": "ATT-0190a7e2" }
  }
}

A PDF costs one credit per page, so a one-page badge costs one credit. A 300-person event is 300 credits, which is $6.00 at the prepaid rate of $0.02 per image.

Print and scan

Send the PDFs to a print shop or print them yourself. Before you print the full run, print one at real size and scan its code with the device you will use on the day. Door scanners differ in which code formats they read, so confirm that before you pick qrcode or code128.

Batches and corrections

Render in batches of 50, keyed by attendee id. A late registration is one more request. A spelling correction is one re-render of one row, and failed jobs are free. Use the same pipeline described for event tickets.

What it does not do

jsontoimg draws the code but does not scan it or check people in. Your check-in app looks up the attendee id and marks it used. Printing and lanyard stock are also outside the render.
